Turn Off Fox News

The following is an email from moveon.org Did you hear that Fox News’ parent company came right out and gave a $1 million contribution directly to the Republican party? So much for "fair and balanced." Fox News is a problem. Which is why we want to pass on this important email from our friends at ColorOfChange, who’ve just launched a new campaign to get Fox News off of TVs in public spaces. Check it out! A year ago, Glenn Beck called the president a racist who had a deep-seated hatred for white people.1 In just over a week, he says he will "reclaim" the legacy of the civil rights movement by holding his "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.—on the same day and place as Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech. You can get mad at Beck. You can protest and try to prevent him from stepping on Dr. King’s honor for one day. The reality is that the next day—and five days a week from there on out—Beck will be back on Fox News, speaking to millions and spreading hate, lies, and fear, as he does every week. The real problem is Fox News. [...]

Pagan: What does it mean?

There is no easy answer to the question. In fact there simply is no standard simple definition. It is a term originally used to refer to a ‘rural dwellers’. Over time the word became associated with people who simply did not accept the concept of monotheism. It does not necessarily follow that ALL pagan people followed polytheism or the worship of natural cycles of the earth. From: http://www.examiner.com/paganism-in-salt-lake-city/paganism-101-what-does-pagan-mean “Ask any person what the word Pagan means and you’ll get a different answer every time, with most of them insisting that their meaning is the correct one. However, even amongst all of the different traditions and religions that span the globe, there is no true consensus as to the exact meaning of the word ‘Pagan’.” Probably the most useful definition (at least for myself) is: “a person who does not acknowledge your god.” Reference: http://www.audioenglish.net/dictionary/pagan.htm I use the term to describe myself as a method of characterizing myself as not belonging to any organized religion but also not adhering to traditional western civilization assumptions regarding values or purpose of existence. As an example, money and possessions are of great value in western civilization, but not amongst all people on the planet [...]

Oil Painting Articles

Much of the history of oil painting and pontifications by self proclaimed oil painting experts (especially on oil painting forums) can become a confusing morass of oil painting babble. One area, that when controlled, that can cause a lot of frustration is the painting surface. No matter how diligent you may be in precise control of each brush stroke, the outcome is going to be affected by the painting surface. The texture of the painting surface (from smooth as glass to tree bark roughness) is a major determinant in control of the paint and clarity of the finished product. The ‘Old Masters’ used an extremely smooth painting surface so as to negate any interference of the painting surface on the intended outcome. And even in contemporary painting, any artist attempting to do a life like portrait will first prepare the painting surface (Gesso) to a glass like finish. About the worst place for a beginner to start painting is on canvas. Most of what you are likely to purchase will be a low grade canvas with a rough surface, having a pre-primed coating of Gesso. The pre-prime is not near enough to give you a smooth surface and applying Gesso [...]

Fine Art Of Style

Oil painting at its most basic level is simply rendering a picture of some sort in colored oil. The question that comes to mind is why do it? And of course there are as many answers as there are artists. However, there are some answers that most artists can identify with, such as “I just enjoy the experience” or “I hope to sell paintings”. If you focus only on the commercial end of oil painting, there is a tendency to jump on the bandwagon of technique and engage a production line of very pretty but very dead art. The net abounds with examples of dead art: illustrations of artifacts that are pretty to look at but tell little about the soul of the artist. There is a form of dead art that has the appearance of painting from the heart until you come to recognize that the artist spent most of his or her time learning technique and rarely traveled the lone road of finding individual style. Style develops as a product of finding your own techniques to solve painting problems. If all you do is copy technique from other artists then what you wind up with is a carbon [...]

Simple menu and photo album for Word Press

Description: a menu allows a large body of links to be viewable in one small space, As an example if you have a category in your word press blog titled Photo Albums which contain a large number of albums (posts), you might want to create a menu to allow the user to navigate directly to a specific album without having to use the previous and next buttons that are standard for viewing posts within a category. This article describes the process for creating a simple iframe menu and also instructions for constructing a simple non plug in type photo album composed mainly of a canned javascript program. You do not need to know javascript programming in order to use this information, but you do need some basic skills using html. This article is intended only for those bloggers who have their own Word Press blog and would like to make a menu of post links and/or a simple non plug-in photo album. The theme I used for my blog is WordPress 3.0 Magazine Basic 2.68 by c.bavota. Photo Album Most of the photo albums available as plug-ins for word press are extremely complicated and overdesigned. Plug-ins should be simple, but [...]
